During Week 5 of online instruction, students were asked to practice sketching pets or small animals in or around their home, such as guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, lizards, squirrels, cats or dogs. Animals are tricky to draw because they move around and you have to work quickly. It’s most important to try to capture the essence of the animal, to capture the likeness and movements, without worrying about too many details. Students worked on adding value and form, as well as adding shadow. From there, students used the drawings as a starting point for creating their own creature. They were shown several examples, and then asked to design their own creature by combining two or more animals. This was such a fun assignment, and students really did an awesome job in creating some unique new characters!
