PRP Artists Partner with Frazier Museum to Create Artwork for Cool Kentucky Exhibit

PRP Visual Art students kicked off the 2020 school year (virtually) with a project to partner with the Frazier Museum. The Frazier invited PRP to create Kentucky themed artwork to accompany the Frazier’s new permanent exhibit: Cool Kentucky!

The Frazier exhibits team created a virtual “tour” of the Cool Kentucky! collection, provided detailed artifact lists, exhibit plans, and background info to spark student inquiry. Students then brainstormed ideas in class using virtual tools, exchanged ideas, and then investigated topics that interested them. Students turned in sketches for approval before starting their final artworks, and completed artist’s statements that reflected upon their process as well as concepts. Students were given choice of medium, and subject (as long as was Kentucky themed).

Supplies for projects were challenging, because many students lack basic art supplies at home. This project also required a standardized paper size to fit gallery frames at the Frazier. Students were required to work under a tight deadline, size constraints, and were required to follow the theme of Cool Kentucky. To distribute materials, we hosted several Art Supply pickup days to get necessary paper and art supplies to artists. When artwork was finished, students uploaded their projects to Google Classroom and then delivered their original artwork to the main office at school. Artworks were sorted, matted and delivered to the Frazier for final selection.
