PRP’s Screen Print shop is back as a student-run, school-based enterprise which will be named PRP Ink. Students were selected from advanced level classes, and were appointed print shop managers, designers, production designers. Together as a class, students decided how to set up the classroom workspace, developed a process to schedule incoming orders, find vendors to order supplies, track production and assist in trouble-shooting equipment. The group just finished their first large t-shirt order for the PRP Step Team. Special thanks to PTSA President and PRP Alum Eddie Squires and to Paul @ Louisville’s Metro Promotions for their help. The PRP tradition continues as students prepare for the ultimate battle between Juniors and Seniors: Powder Puff Games 2017.

It’s not every year that we have the opportunity to participate in a Solar Eclipse party! Graphics students gathered with the rest of PRP’s student body to witness this celestial event.

This spring students trained and tested to complete their Adobe Certified Associate exams. The ACA certification validates basic, entry-level skills in digital communication, creation, and design using Adobe tools. The state of Kentucky requires Graphic Design Pathway students to pass two Adobe certifications, using Adobe InDesign [Page Layout software], Photoshop or Illustrator. I’m pleased to report that the following students passed at least one Adobe Certification this year:

This year, PRP’s Advanced Design Class [PRP Creative] tackled the issue of teen tobacco use through the development of a social media campaign and three 30 second PSAs. The campaign was created in collaboration with community partner, Norton Children’s Hospital, and students were mentored by Norton Health and Wellness Manager Jenita Lyons.

The work of the campaign was featured in April during the 2017 KY Public Health Conference, held at the Owensboro, KY Convention Center. PRP was the only high school represented among the many universities and colleges at the conference, and students garnered the attention of many health care agencies there. This type of collaboration is a key component of project-based learning in the classroom. Students learn hands-on skills while working directly with business professionals from within the community. Plans are underway to submit their poster to the CDC, as well as incorporate their creative work into JCPS Health and Wellness Curriculum modules.

A huge shout out to the following students who competed in the 2017 Skills USA KY State Championships! Representing PRP High School were: Nathan Thompson, Patrick Cleary, Kaylyn Wade, Abigail Stewart and Cassy Hooper. Students competed in the categories of Advertising Design, Photography, and Display Photograph [State Only Contest].

Abigail Stewart placed 1st in Advertising Design, Kaylyn Wade placed 1st in Display Photograph and in Photography, and Patrick Cleary placed third in Photography. First place winners qualify to compete at the Skills USA Nationals in Louisville, Summer 2017

A very special “Thank you” to the TARGET Corporation for the travel grant allowing us to visit the Cincinnati Museum of Art to see the Van Gogh exhibit entitled: Into the Undergrowth in January.

In this exhibition, which was presented only at the Cincinnati Art Museum, students explored original masterworks of iconic Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries as they viewed authentic impressionist masterworks. Students discovered the artist through his own words, extensively quoted from correspondence with his brother Theo.  They explored narrative themes in Van Gogh’s work and compared/contrasted Van Gogh’s reactions to those of contemporary artists. Then, they explored their own reactions to technology innovations of today.
